The Vital Port of Call for Fishermen and their families
For the past 137 years, the Fishermen’s Mission has been supporting the work of Fishermen around the UK’s shores. We are delighted to once again be the official charity of SEAFEAST - The Dorset Seafood Festival - and hope you will visit our stand and learn about our work.
Some facts about our work and the fishing industry:
Fishing is the most dangerous peace time occupation in the UK.
On average one Fisherman is killed every six weeks.
Approximately one fishing vessel will go missing every 20 days.
The Fishermen’s Mission is the only national charity that delivers emergency response and welfare help to active and retired fishermen and their families.
We offer immediate assistance, day or night, to the families of fishermen who have been killed or seriously injured. We currently support over 700 widows of fishermen and over 150 Children.
We care for the survivors of fishing accidents. Helping injured or ill fishermen to secure medical help and providing emergency accommodation and food.
Over 55,000 miles are travelled by Fishermen’s Mission Port Staff to alleviate loneliness by visiting both active & retired fishermen and their families at home or in hospital.
We offer welfare and support to overseas fishermen working in the UK fishing industry, especially those who must live aboard boats. providing Christian pastoral and practical help, including problems with sickness, bereavement, and family difficulties.
For every £1 generated we spend 88p providing our services.
The continued support shown by The Dorset Seafood Festival organisers, is incredible, we’d like to extend our thanks to the Weymouth community and event sponsors, this is always such an amazing event to be part of and helps to raise funds for the vital work we undertake in the fishing community.
We all look forward to seeing you at the festival.
