Fishermen's Mission

Whilst the Fishermen’s Mission has been through many changes to meet the ever changing demands of the fishing industry our core mission has remained constant; to support our fishermen, their families and a way of life.

This year’s Dorset Seafood Festival promises to be yet another celebration of all the best seafood that Dorset and the surrounding area has to offer, and you will struggle to see a better offering of fresh, sustainable and, most importantly, tasty seafood anywhere in the world. We often take for granted the boats and fishermen that bring this wonderful bounty to our shores: however, fishing remains the most dangerous peacetime occupation and there is increasing pressure on the under 10-metre fleet, such as in Weymouth, just to make their boats pay and to keep fishing communities alive. All down the south west coast fishing communities are disappearing and once they are gone they will be gone forever. A Weymouth quayside without its fishing boats would not only be a sadder place but also have deep social and economic consequences for the wider community.

Fishermen's MissionThe Fishermen’s Mission fights poverty and despair in our fishing communities by providing emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families. We are proud to be the benefiting charity for the Dorset Seafood Festival and would like to thank the organisers and the local community for their continued support as we carry out our vital work. It is testament to the festival that they not only support the region’s seafood, but also the brave men and women who catch it.
